Jose Quirarte is a second generation, queer, and Latinx therapist with a deep passion for supporting and uplifting marginalized communities. He has a degree in history from Cal Poly Pomona with an early interest in becoming a history teacher focused upon BIPOC American history. However, his passion in learning about BIPOC stories inspired him to want to work more hands-on within the communities he researched. He changed careers and completed his Master’s degree for Marital and Family Therapy at Alliant International University, where he worked at a high school in downtown Los Angeles supporting Latinx teens and their families. Jose is currently in a PhD program for Marriage and Family Therapy with the goal of conducting qualitative strength-based research within the Latinx community.
Jose draws from his history background to create a therapeutic relationship with his clients that is rooted in feminism and social constructionism. He is a collaborative therapist that believes that everyone has the knowledge and expertise needed to live their own lives authentically. Jose utilizes experiential and postmodern therapies to support clients in exploring their problems, increasing their agency, and strengthening their own preferred self.
Through his personal and clinical experiences Jose is familiar with the challenges BIPOC, immigrants, neurodivergent, and queer folks face, and aspires to support these communities both inside and outside of the therapy room. He has experience working with individuals, families, couples, and poly relationships. He also has experience supporting clients through a variety of presenting issues such as depression, anxiety, relational trauma, low self-esteem, sexual challenges, communication problems, repairing after affairs/broken trust, acculturation challenges, and family dynamic problems.
In his free time, Jose loves to read and play video games. You can find him reading horror and fantasy books, or playing World of Warcraft and Stardew Valley. He also enjoys spending time at fairs, theme parks, movie theatres, pop-up shops, farmers markets, the beach, or any event where he has the excuse to eat junk food with his boyfriend.
Jose Quirarte is a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (#143062) working under the supervision of Kameryn “Yams” Rose, LMFT #119932.
